The work goes on at RGC

Richmond (Yorks) Golf Club, club has achieved some great success recently in gaining a grant to help during the CV-19 pandemic, being awarded Women in Golf status and achieving SafeGolf accreditation, all through the governing body England Golf.

Like all other clubs, Richmond Golf Club is closed during the current lockdown, but that has not stopped great work going on ready for the re-opening, hopefully in the Spring.

The Greenkeepers have made some tremendous strides in course improvements during the lockdown, most notably on the iconic ‘signature hole’ which is the 18th and aptly named ‘Hades’, in view of its degree of difficulty.

Ever since Owen Beaumont Pease, Golf Club Captain for nine successive years from 1904, drove his golf ball through ‘Hades’, this hole has captured the imagination of many golfers since.

The Greenkeepers have restored the hole to present it as it would have looked back in Owen’s time, trimming back trees and shrubs to enable golfers to view the splendour of the 18th green and the attractive clubhouse.

The photographs show the 18th viewed before and after the restoration work was undertaken.

Iain Leversuch, Head Greenkeeper at Richmond, said: “We’ve been able to crack on and get much work done on the course during lockdown, but we can’t wait to welcome our members and visitors back to this splendid place.”
