Chairman’s Newsletter – May 2024
Yes, it is RGC on the front of the new score cards.
Golf Season
We finally have some lighter nights with new longer hours in the shop and the bar. The season is now in ‘full swing’ with the RDC being played this weekend, and also increased numbers playing in the castle comp and in Sunday competitions. It’s also been a great start for both our Ladies and Gents teams in various leagues and many thanks to all of the players for representing the club. Also, a huge well done to Karen Jobling for reaching the quarter finals in the English Senior Women’s Amateur Championship and then for reaching the semi-finals in the Northern Championship.
The Course and the Weather
Just when we thought the course was drying out…There has been a few comments regarding the rough recently and all I would ask is that we are all patient at the moment. The club has just invested further in the Green Keepers team, with the addition of a 4th member as a seasonal worker. I have discussed the rough with the Head Greenkeeper and he has informed me that the rough is the same height as it was last year. The issue is with the combination of over 150mm of rain in May, very wet grass, and the increase in soil temperature. I am sure you are all seeing the same with your gardens at home, so imagine trying to control 98 acres of fast-growing grass! Overall, I am sure you would agree that the course has been in great condition all year, throughout a very wet start to 2024.
Practice Area and Academy Course
For those members who use the top practice area (I don’t, which explains my game at the moment), you will see that there is a new 6-hole academy course being cut into that area. This will create a great area for our ever-growing ladies academy and also for our Junior section, which will be re-established this year. There will still be room for all members to practice as well.
Thanks to Volunteers
Whilst we have a few regular members who volunteer to support the club, I wanted to take this opportunity to thank Elaine and Joan for their hard work in the gardens around the clubhouse. They are looking great with all the new colours coming through. If you would like to support the club in this area or any other aspect of the club, please don’t hesitate to contact me or the club office and we would be delighted to talk to you about volunteering and providing much needed assistance.
